The inverted traction position decompresses discs and has a beneficial effect on thin degenerating discs. Studies have concluded that a minimum of 70 seconds is required for maximum decompression. Health professionals recommend 1 to 3 minutes of use, 2-3 times a day. Strengthening exercises which can be performed after the initial traction position aid in developing weak abdominal and back muscles. The inverted position enhances the quality of these exercises.
